After the Battle on Starship Hill Prologue to The Children of the Sky Zones of Thought series Book 4 eBook Vernor Vinge

Once more, Vernor Vinge delivers an excellent work full of unique characters, interesting conflicts and problems, and engaging plots. I have enjoyed his entire milieu and this was no different. The alien Tines species is further developed quite extensively in this novel, with some interesting issues of how a group mind of near-canids works and can be disrupted, hurt, or coopted by a larger group, and how the Tines develop technologies to deal with these problems. We also see the children from the crashed spaceship in the last book growing up as they have been taken out of stasis, and build a human community within the Tines society, how their alienness as individuals leads to conflict among the Tines, which also includes factionalism among the children as they mature and vie for power over their community.

After the Battle on Starship Hill Prologue to The Children of the Sky Zones of Thought series Book 4 eBook Vernor Vinge Reviews

A good story on the events that take place immediately after the closing events of "A Fire Upon the Deep". We're back on the Tine's world, several years after "A Fire Upon the Deep" ends, and the jockeying for power by the Tines has begun. I would have given a 5-star rating to this story except for the fact that all of it is contained in "The Children of the Sky" by Vinge. So ignore this purchase and just buy the book instead.
Very odd story line. I found it extremely hard to follow and was glad that it was a short or partial story. The authors writing in and of itself was good, but the story line is just too bizarre for me to enjoy. This author may have a cult following, but that won't include me. You may like it, to that I say, each to their own.
I purchased this "prologue" thinking that it would add something to the storyline. Instead, all I received was the first three chapters of a book that I had already advance-ordered. I don't mind publishers releasing teasers that give us a preview of a soon-to-be-released book (Reamde is a great example of how this can help build buzz) - but to charge for it? Simply another rip-off by already greedy publishers. The only thing keeping this review from one-star is the quality of Vinge's writing, and my assumption that he had nothing to do with this release.
Save yourself 99 cents, and buy the real book. I just finished it thought it was a worthy sequel.
I guess I didn't read the description very well, because I had already read Children of the Sky. I thought maybe this was a link between that book and its predecessor. It is not -- it is the first three chapters of Children of the Sky. So... glad it was free, because it wasn't anything new.

3 stars because I have to give a rating... obviously I would prefer not to rate it at all, but since I have to, I figured middle-of-the-road is best.
This is like a meal of exotic food- at first, strange, then your mind really looks forward to savoring the entre. Except that the chapter ends and the next one starts the reader back at square one, trying to isolate the ingredients. I understand the concept of slow zones and changes to local conditions; yet the book never answers what caused Ravna to reside on this planet. So it is populated by multiple beings, and is the target of a fleet bent on revenge. -And then what???
, please link this to the book with the answers in order to enjoy the meal properly.
While not containing the broad "space opera" sweep of A Fire Upon the Deep, to which it's a sequel, this novel goes on to explore the multi-individual consciousness of the "Packs," a striking development in its predecessor that deserves the attention, as well as elaborating on the political and social realities such a world might entail. The humans are... all too human, with dramatic results as factionalism and skepticism create disunity and a struggle for coherent purpose among the survivors, once children and now fast becoming adults, from the previous novel's tale of escape from unspeakable evil. Satisfying on its own, but not quite the pinnacle of speculative vision A Fire Upon the Deep might lead a reader to expect, thus my four as opposed to five stars.
So this is a small intro to the second book in the series. The saga's premise is that there are 3 levels in the universe and each ascending level has technology and abilities that the level below it doesn't. It is a great premise. And it appears that he is well reviewed. However, against this fascinating backdrop, a world that is composed of slightly tweaked canines takes center stage. These characters in general express the worst components of human nature with only an occasional exhibition of brilliance. Yawn. Nothing groundbreaking here. Not recommended unless you loved the last one, and caution even if you did.
