Neverfall edition by Brodi Ashton Children eBooks

The challenge here was to make us love Cole, the "villain" from the first book. It's a great twist and I was thrilled with the prospect. From the opening chapter when I realized we were getting his side of the story I couldn't wait to see how Ashton would make us like him. But then the plot wandered into this strange alternate-society mystery that could have been fascinating but didn't really reach its potential. Then there was Cole's prolonged imprisonment which ought to have been his transforming experience but just seemed to make him crazy. So we're left, in the end, with only a shell character who vows to recapture Nik in what basically has a weird stalker vibe instead of an eternal, desperate love vibe. I didn't think that could be the end of the book. "It's over? Really?" There was so much more to do with Cole. What happened? I stopped the series here, after really enjoying the first one. I just couldn't recover from the failure of Cole's redemption.

Neverfall edition by Brodi Ashton Children eBooks Reviews

The first novel left me feeling breathless and I have been looking forward to reading more from this series since the first book came out.

I knew after reading Everneath that there was so much more to Cole than the glimpses into him that we saw. I found myself softening towards him by the time I turned the last page and yes, my heart even went out to him a little. It was obvious he had feelings for Nikki, whether he was aware of it or not.

I am so glad I read this. Well, maybe not actually because I really didn't want to love Cole, I really didn't. I didn't want to get sucked into another love triangle. I wanted the clear choice to be Jack and not get my heart broken when the one I ended up liking most wasn't the one the girl picked. But, yet, here I am. Once again falling for the bad boy.

Yep. I said it. I fell a little bit in love with Cole after reading this. Okay, maybe not love, maybe just a really strong like. But dang it, I didn't want that to even happen!

Sigh. Now I have to read the next book soon.

This was very well done and I loved every minute of it.
I love, love, love (wow- I sound like I'm 15) Everneath. I actually had problems sleeping the night after I finished it. The night after I finished Neverfall, I was just unhappy. Not that this is a bad book. But I really found that I don't like Cole's POV. He started as a jerk, and frankly he ended as a jerk. I really didn't see much growth or change in him.

All that being said. I am so glad that I read this novella, it really helped with "Everbound". It really helped seeing Cole's manipulation of Nikki. Emotional manipulation that helped fill in the story line of Everneath. Also- manipulation that helps the ending of Everbound make sense as well. (Cole does not change and this book is invaluable in understanding him)
So, pretty much the only reason I've been putting off reading my ARC of Everbound is because I was waiting to read this novella from Cole's point-of-view. Well, that and my reading buddy Em will kill me if I start it without her. =) I knew it probably wouldn't add that much to the story, but doesn't every girl want to get inside of the guy's head and find out what he's really thinking? I know I was curious!

This short story mostly focuses on Cole's unwillingness to admit to himself that it's not just his need to find another Forfeit like Nikki that fuels his obsession with her...it's also his desire for Nikki to be his and his alone that stokes the flames of his passion for ruling the Everneath. After awhile, it almost seems like he doesn't even care about the throne, so much as making Nikki his. He even gets himself into a spot of trouble because of it. I liked seeing the inner-workings of this Everliving's mind, and because of that aforementioned trouble, there's plenty of time to figure out how Cole thinks and what he most desires.

As in the first book, there are portions of the story told in the present and those are interspersed with flashbacks to before the last Feed and a few memories from the six months after. So, not only do we get to dig a little deeper into what makes Cole tick, but we also get to see key moments from Everneath from his perspective and see what hand he really had in the final outcome. I have to say that I was more than a little surprised...I actually still held out hope that he orchestrated the entire ordeal, but I could still be further shocked because at less than 100 pages, it's hard to get the full picture. That just means it's time to pick up Everbound!!! D
Let me start by saying that Neverfall is not necessary to read before Everbound, and frankly, it's not really worth $2.99 either. "Thrilling" is probably the wrong word for this novella, too. Yes, Cole gets himself into a bind, but we already know he gets out of it. How else would he be able to appear in the next books? Maybe if you're a super hardcore Cole lover, Neverfall will be more entertaining for you. But I love Cole, and this just did nothing for me. I don't feel like I know him any better, but I did enjoy seeing how he met Nikki from his perspective.

One interesting thing to come out of Neverfall was the introduction of Delphinian Scholars. They're basically Everlings who are no longer living in the Everneath and crave mass amounts of knowledge. They know everything, so Cole thinks that they can help him figure out how Nikki survived the feed. Now this is where I decided that this story wasn't worth reading. We already know how she did it! This story just uses different words to describe it. Lame. I did like getting into Cole's head, especially when he was loosing his mind during his predicament, but save yourself $3 and just ask me-- or someone else-- for a synopsis if you're curious. None of the events of Neverfall come up in Everbound anyway.
